ROCK TOMBS

Lycian Rock Tombs:

The ancient works of art from the 4th century BC dating back to the Lycian period attracts attention in the Fethiye city centre. These are the tombs, carved into natural rocks, which has become the symbol of the district. Amintas which is the most elaborate of these tombs can be reached via many regular stairs.

It can also be seen easily from the plain below and the admiration for its greatness increases even more when approached closer. At the centre of the left-side column, ‘Amintas, son of Herpamias,’ was written in the alphabet of 4th century B.C. The identity of this man is not known exactly.There are also various sarcophagi in the district Fethiye worth to be seen.

One of them is on the street leading to the rock tombs and another is located near the governor's office. The latter one dates back to the year 340 B.C. It has relieves and has stood intact up to the present. The relieves on the lid depict four warriors with shields in their hands and a man in a long robe sitting on the right. There are figures also on the sides. In addition, there are the two sarcophagi at the Cumhuriyet district, dated to the fourth century B.C. one of which has also relieves which are quite demolished.
